The course is conducted in accordance with the regulations VI/1, VI/2, VI/3 and VI/4 of the STCW Convention, sections A-VI/1, A-VI/2, A-VI/3 and A-VI/4 of the STCW Code and Tables of the STCW Code A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3, A-VI/2-1, A-VI/3, A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2.
After completing the course, you should have knowledge of:
- Personal rescue equipment,
- Survival at sea,
- Take command of a lifeboat or man-overboard boat during and after launch,
- Operate the engine of a lifeboat,
- Handle survivors and rescue craft after evacuating the ship,
- Use devices to indicate position, including communication and signaling equipment, light and smoke signals,
- Minimize risk of fire,
- Use of fire extinguishers and fire equipment,
- Lead firefighting operations on board ships,
- Organize and train fire teams,
- Inspect and maintain facilities and equipment for fire detection and extinguishing,
- Investigate incidents involving fire and prepare reports on these,
- General first aid principles,
- Bleeding, burns and shock,
- Provide first aid immediately in case of accident or illness on board,
- Lifesaving first aid,
- Hygiene on board,
- Head/neck/back injuries,
- Mental reactions and stress management,
- Resources on board and Radio Medico,
- Alcohol and drug abuse,
- Deaths at sea,
- General nursing,
- Monitoring and documentation,
- Pathology,
- Treatment of rescued persons,
- Medicines and medical equipment,
- Wound treatment and simple surgical treatment.
Course participants must have completed and passed training in accordance with the STCW Code's tables for basic safety training A-VI/1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 and advanced safety training tables A-VI/2-1, A-VI/3, A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2.
The duration of the course is 8 days. Start on Wednesdays, tuition-free Saturday and Sunday and end on Friday the following week.
- 1 day is 8 school hours
- 1 school hour is 45 minutes
Deck officers who have a course certificate and navigator's certificate that have expired, and who have not maintained the requirement for a minimum of 12 months' sea service during the last five years.
