The shoulder width is measured by certified personnel in accordance with guidelines given by The passenger size working group, The helicopter safety steering group and Step Change in Safety.
After the participant has been measured, he or she is categorized into one of two categories - Non Extra Broad or Extra Broad.
If you are not extra broad-shouldered, you can sit where you want in the helicopter, while those who are categorized as extra broad-shouldered get designated seats in the helicopter, then with large windows as an emergency exit.
The shoulder width is measured on bare skin, so the participant must wear a t-shirt / singlet for the measurement itself.
