After successful completion of the course, the participant should have achieved an understanding of competence based training and assessment of learners as specified in STCW regulation I/6 and section A-I/6. The objective includes design of assessment, assessment briefing, monitoring, de-briefing and feedback, and assessment methods.
This course is based on IMO Model Course 6.10, 2012 Edition. ‘Train the simulator trainer and assessor’, and ‘DNVGL-ST-0025 Competence of maritime simulator instructors’.
Themes in the course are:
The course involves conventional teaching and training methods, participative training techniques (such as task solving, both individually and in groups) and simulation exercises involving ‘role playing’. The course has a large practical component in which the participants implements the theoretical guidelines by planning, creating, executing and evaluating their own simulation exercises. The experiential nature of the course being conducted largely using simulators provides the participants the opportunity to hone the necessary skills required to be an effective simulator instructor.

In order to fully benefit from this course, the participants should have some experience in conducting training. The participants should have completed Training Course for Instructors based on IMO Model Course 6.09 or a similar programme in which the underlying concepts and the principles of the pedagogical processes are dealt with.
