GWO - Sea Survival

The object of this course is to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills to manage safe and secure operations in offshore environments. Through a combination of theoretical and practical training, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to implement necessary preventive measures in various scenarios, including transfers from shore to installation vessels or wind turbine generators (WTG) and vice versa, during both normal operations and emergency situations in an offshore wind energy setting.

This module focuses on critical skills and knowledge for survival at sea. Participants will be trained in handling emergency situations involving vessel evacuation, the use of survival equipment, and techniques for signalling for rescue. The training also includes practical exercises in water to ensure participants can respond effectively to maritime emergencies.

Key Objectives of the Sea Survival Module:

• Knowledge of Relevant Laws and Regulations: Participants will become familiar with applicable rules and guidelines and understand their roles and responsibilities in offshore wind farms.

• Understanding Proper Attire and Behaviour: The course emphasizes the importance of appropriate clothing and behaviour in offshore wind environments, as well as the ability to identify and treat stages of cold shock, hypothermia, and drowning.

• Knowledge of Rescue Equipment: Participants will learn to recognize the advantages and limitations of rescue equipment and personal protective equipment, and how to use them safely and appropriately.

• Understanding GMDSS and SAR: The course provides insights into the Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS) and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.

• Survival Skills: Training will include essential skills needed to increase survival chances in emergency situations at sea, both individually and as part of a team.

• Safe Conduct on Installations and Vessels: The course will instruct participants on maintaining safety during normal operations, emergencies, and evacuations.

• Safe Transfer of Personnel and Equipment: The training covers safe transfer procedures of personnel and equipment between shore and vessels, as well as between WTGs and vessels, including assistance in man-overboard (MOB) situations.

Certificate Validity Period:

• The certificate issued upon completion is valid for 24 months.
• Certificates and training records must be renewed before the end of this validity period.
• If a certificate expires, the participant must complete the full Sea Survival training to obtain a new training record.

Target audience

Personnel who will be working in the wind industry or related fields. Personnel that perform job functions that have been risk assessed by their employer or their workplace duty holder as a function, where training according to one or more modules of the BST standard may mitigate of the identified risks.
